A KENTUCKIAN!Kirk Daniel Stone
By Glenn Arnette, lll
When I travel the world I frequently run into people who have something to say. And that was the case when I met Kirk Daniel Stone who was working front desk at the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Lexington, Kentucky.
Now I am a Southern guy and I have an accent, but let me tell you about Kirk’s slow talking Southern drag. I even said to him, “Why are you talking so slow?” His reply made me realize there is something special about this Kentucky University student. He said, “I talk slow so I can think twice as fast!” That answer made me want to know more about this hard working young man.
Kirk hails from a small mining town called Marion, Kentucky close to Sturgis and Paducah. His Dad, Danny Stone, supported his family by working as a coalminer for 28 years at the Island Creek Mine. His mother, Karen Stone, works for the Crittenden County Attorney’s office. He has a sister, Kristen, who graduated from the University Of Kentucky Law School and now works with the Federal Government in Social Security.
Kirk will begin his senior year in September and plans to finish his degree in Hospitality Management. His hope is to continue his Masters in that field in Chicago. Right now he is in the learning mode by working all phases of the business; i.e. front desk, housekeeping, food service and night audit. In his spare time he is a sports “nut” for the UK Basketball and Football. He likes to work out with weights and ride his Harley Davidson Motor Cycle (883R).
The job and enjoyment of life comes with hard work. College loans make it difficult when a student finishes that senior year and steps into the world. As Kirk said, “Thank goodness for the Federal loans, it will get me through college. Each year because of his good grades, he receives a small scholarship from the college. “That helps!” Kirk replied!
Kirk really worked hard and with his loving parents supporting him as much as possible, he is able to be in the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He likes to party, but his future is now so he limits the “crazy times”.
Because of his Dad telling him to get out of the small town, go to college, better yourself and make a statement in the world, Kirk is making that happen. Kentucky people really care about family and the Stone family is no exception. Because of the mining days, his Dad developed “black lung” disease, but that does not stop him from being proud about his son. Recently his dad surprised him with two new tires for his Harley and a visit to see him at UK. Believe me, he loved that!
Why this story? Well, I believe in people and Danny and Karen Stone took their kids to another level. They gave them a lot of love and dreams to make them become better people and that is called HOPE. Kirk will succeed because he talks slow, left Marion and decided to be a man. One day in the future you might just run into him at Disney or some major hotel around the world.
Thanks, Kirk Stone, for the few moments of your time. Now, get those college loans paid off!
