NORTH CAROLINA AT ITS BEST!
The Perfect Family Vacation!
By Glenn Arnette, lll
“Nothing could be finer than to be in North Carolina in the morning!” (Sounds like a song!) Believe me that was the truth when I arrived and the weather was cool and sunny. I just had to get away from the Florida heat, so a friend invited me to fly away for a few days. After landing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, I rented a “Budget” car and headed to Clemmons, North Carolina to surprise my cousin, Chandler, on her 75 birthday. At exactly 3 PM I entered her house where there was a party going on with about 12 of her closest friends. Surprising her with three balloons and packages in my hands, she turned around and could not believe I was there. Her friends screamed when they saw me and said, “He must be the stripper!” Now, this body of mine is over-the-hill and my stripping days are completely gone, including a bathing suit in a swimming pool, but with all the applause and cheers, I did think about it. Guess I could have been the novelty for the day! LOLThe next day we headed up to my favorite part of North Carolina, Boone / Blowing Rock. First we rode around just getting ourselves acclimated to the area. From the Daniel Boone Inn, passing the Appalachian College, we headed for the Tweetsie Railroad Wild West Theme Park Adventure. I had not been there in years, but this time found it to be fun, relaxing and exciting from the train ride to the chair lift. It was cowboys and Indians and the famous No. 12 steam locomotive. This is a family park and it will keep you entertained and the price of admission is very reasonable. (Call 800- 526-5740 or go to the computer www.tweetsie.com. If you enjoy “fun” without the headaches of Disney, this is the famous place to visit in the North Carolina mountains. Just being there made me “young” again!
After the park we headed to Blowing Rock. This village is perfect for shopping and having a delicious lunch. It is quaint, friendly and most of all beautiful. While there you must go to the main attraction for the area and that is The Blowing Rock! The Rock is an immense cliff 4000 feet about sea level, overhanging Johns River Gorge 3000 feet below. The views are for miles! Breathtaking! This is a camera moment and the observation tower is the best I have ever seen. You should give yourself time to stroll through the trails and gardens and hear the Legend of Blowing Rock. I had forgotten how wonderful this attraction was and will certainly return over and over again.
Now it was time for the HORN IN THE WEST, an outdoor drama that has been in existence since 1952. What a treat! Written by Dr. Kermit Hunter, this Revolutionary War drama relates the story of the pioneers who braved the wilderness to settle in the Blue Ridge Mountains seeking freedom from the British Tyranny. The setting and Daniel Boone Amphitheatre could not be more beautiful. From sundown to darkness, this drama keeps you on the edge of your seat as the story comes to life in sound, costumes, excellent lighting and qualified acting from the cast. You will not be disappointed when you take the time to enjoy a cool evening under the stars with theatre. The Indian dance is always a special treat at the end of the first act! Congratulations for making this drama a running “hit” after all those years. By-the-way, every seat is a perfect seat in this theatre.
All of the above was one day in the Boone / Blowing Rock area. We certainly did not do or see everything, but we really had a wonderful time. I would say this is the best place for a family vacation in the great State of North Carolina! Have fun!
